Jay Thane, a native Montanan, earned his B.A. in photography from Montana State University (MSU) in 2001. During his matriculation at MSU, Jay worked his way from contributing photographer to Photo Editor for MSU’s student-run newspaper, The Exponent. His college career served to strengthen his passion for sports photography, his experience in journalism, his photographic storytelling, and his mastery of portraiture. After graduation, Jay’s journalism background led him to a beach town in the Florida panhandle, where he worked for two years as a photojournalist at The Destin Log. While the Florida sun and white sand beaches were alluring, Jay missed family, friends, and the mountains of Montana. Before returning to Bozeman, he spent a month in Guinea, West Africa, where his sister was serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer. This world photo adventure presented challenging lighting scenarios that resulted in Jay’s advanced and unique ability to utilize natural light and further enhanced his ability to capture intimate moments, even with the shyest of subjects. In July of 2004, Jay returned to the four seasons, awe-inspiring landscapes, and down-to-earth people of Montana. He currently serves as the principle photographer for the Montana State University News Service while simultaneously building and maintaining his private photography business: Blue Sky Photography. Jay’s original passion for sports photography has given him impeccable timing, allowing him to celebrate and preserve each perfect moment. He now specializes in portraiture and weddings.
